Fred Astaire

Fred Astaire, born Frederick Austerlitz on May 10, 1899, and departing on June 22, 1987, left an indelible mark as an American dancer, actor, singer, choreographer, and presenter. Widely acclaimed as the “greatest popular-music dancer of all time,” Astaire garnered a plethora of awards, including an Honorary Academy Award, three Primetime Emmy Awards, a BAFTA Award, two Golden Globe Awards, and a Grammy Award. His contributions were further acknowledged through the Film Society of Lincoln Center tribute in 1973, the Kennedy Center Honors in 1978, and the AFI Life Achievement Award in 1980. Notably, he earned his place on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1960, the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 1972, and the Television Hall of Fame in 1989.

In acknowledgment of his enduring impact, the American Film Institute ranked Astaire as the fifth-greatest male star of Classic Hollywood cinema in their list “100 Years… 100 Stars.” Astaire’s legacy endures as a testament to his unparalleled contributions to the world of entertainment.
